CWDS Glossary
The CWDS Glossary includes a List of Acronyms and defined terms captured from various models, reports, and other artifacts pertaining to the Child Welfare System – California Automated Response and Engagement System (CWS-CARES) Project. The Glossary standardizes terms used across the various project disciplines; each term is defined with its meaning specific to the project domain.

Live Scan
An inkless, electronic means of capturing fingerprints in a digitized format and submitting State of California and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprint-based background checks. CCLD uses Live Scan to fingerprint Department employees and facility personnel within applicant and licensed facilities. Users are external applicants, external facility employees, external foster/adoptive parents, CCLD staff, and CCLD vendors.
Logical Data Model
A conceptual view of the domain entities, the relationship between those entities, and the key attributes for each of the identified entities.
Los Angeles Eligibility, Automated Determination, Evaluation and Reporting (LEADER)
LEADER is the welfare eligibility determination consortium consisting of Los Angeles County, which represents approximately 35 percent of the welfare caseload in the State of California. LEADER is also the name of the system used by the LEADER consortium.
Maintenance
In the context of traditional software and hardware maintenance, the activities undertaken for the purpose of modifying a system to perform Corrective Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance, Perfective Maintenance, Emergency Maintenance or Adaptive Maintenance.
In the context of DevOps, the tools, practices and ideas that support people maintaining a system including version control and configuration management, repeatable build and deployment processes, developer and operation staff collaboration to investigate and solve problems and building and sharing a culture of trust and transparency.

Maintenance and Operations (M&O)
The phase in a system’s life cycle during which the system is available for use as intended. No new development is being conducted, but routine maintenance, updates, bug fixes, and security items are tended to.
Major Release
A planned Release that encompasses an agreed upon scope of modifications to the CWS-CARES applications and databases. Major Releases are typically scheduled on a quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis.
Male
An individual of the sex that is typically capable of producing small, usually motile gametes (such as sperm or spermatozoa) which fertilize the eggs of a female.
Mandated Reporter
A person employed in a profession designated within the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (California Penal Code sections 11164 - 11174.3) who is legally obligated to report to law enforcement and/or child welfare services any incident “reasonably suspected” of being child abuse or neglect.
Manual Test
This is the process of manually reviewing and testing a software/application for errors, defects and/or vulnerabilities. To guarantee completeness of testing, the tester follows a written test plan with detailed test cases.
Masculine
The socially constructed and culturally specific gender behaviors expected of males.
